Strange Planet: Sewer Pipe Hotel

If you ever find yourself traveling near Ottensheim, Austria, (located in Upper Austria just seven miles from Linz on the Danube River) in need of a place to rest your head, the Das Park Hotel offers an affordable night’s rest so long as you don’t mind sleeping in a former sewer pipe. The hotel, which is only open from May to October, has put cement pipes to unanticipated use with each pipe featuring a made-up double bed and enough room for backpack storage, but bathrooms and restaurants are not on site (it’s suggested that you use a nearby gas station should you need to go). The doors of the rooms come affixed with code locks and guests can choose how much they would like to pay for the room each night. The Das Park Hotel is located on Rodlpark, the site of the annual Ottensheim Open Air music festival each summer in June. [Via Passportchop

I doubt that these pipes are “used”, having worked in installing such a pipe you just don’t dig these back up, clean them off and they are good to go. There would be staining that would never come off and the expense would be more then just getting new ones. Also chances are these pipes would be used only for stormwater not raw sewage. Overall a good idea, but must smell like pee all around them, chances no backpacker is going to hike to a gas station at night to take a pee.

Anthony Moore said, I think that’s neat gow they take sewer pipes and make them into a hotel, I’d say they could make make them water proof and take two or three pipes and make more room and put a bathroom in them too.

In his nove Cannery Row, John Steinbeck has one of his characters live in a large pipe like these. The no el was written in the 1940s I believe.

What a weird idea!! Well, its better than to sleep on the bench rather! But from inside the rooms are looking quite good, not as bad as we expected! At some point it’s a great idea!!

Many engineers around the world are gnashing their teeth, at your use of the term ‘cement’, which is and INGREDIENT of concrete pipes. You are showing a CONCRETE pipe.

What a wonderfully creative, green and environmentally responsible thing to do! It certainly makes the hotel experience memorable because not all of us want to follow the crowd. I think that this is a wonderful alternative to hostels for backpackers and I’m willing to bet a whole lot more peaceful! lol Thank you for sharing this phenomenon with us.

Oh god, these pipes are really strange! However maybe it is better than to sleep in a car. But I wonder if it is clean enough to sleep in.
