ljub1.jpgHello city-lovers! Today we’re headed to the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana, where resident Petra tells us what she loves about her hometown.

Ljubljana is My City

The first place I take a visitor from out of town is Bled, about 37 miles away, but worth the trip.

When I crave a large coffee I always go to Le Petit Café.

If you come to my city, get your picture on one of the many bridges.

For a huge splurge I go to BTC. Take the bus nr. 27 from the city centre. It’s only 15 mins away and you get everything there.

My favorite jogging/walking route is Pot spominov in tovarištva (The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship), a circular 18.6-mile path around Ljubljana.

For live music, check out one of the Irish pubs or Emonska Klet.

Slast, right on the main street, is the spot for late-night eats.

In the spring you should take a walk to Rožnik.

In the summer you should leave Ljubljana and visit the seaside!

1924240389_1cea6c8320.jpgIn the fall you should observe the leaves falling in Tivoli Park.

In winter you should see the beautifully decorated castle from Kongresni trg.

Don’t miss the Škisova tržinca students’ festival in May. There are so many events for students it’s difficult to choose just one.

The best way to see my city is on foot or by bike.

When I think about my city, the song that comes to mind is “Zelene livade s teboj.”

If you have kids, you won’t want to miss the zoo or science center (Hiša eksperimentov).

Heavy rain and sun in the same day could only happen in my city.

We spent 3 nights in Ljubljana, and two weeks in Slovenia. We fell in love with the country! One of our highlights was hiking in the Julian Alps, starting in Bohinj (just past Bled). We hiked from hut to hut on and around Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia. We also had an amazing time rafting on the beautiful Soca river, and visiting the nearby WWI museum in Kobarid. When you add our trips to the caves in the south, the beach, the castles – we just had a wonderful time and can’t wait to go back.

We’re actually from New York City, but back in 2003 we took a 6 week trip, part of which I described above.
We flew non-stop to Venice, spent three nights there, then took a ferry to Istria, where we rented a car and drove straight to the Julian Alps for five nights of hut-to-hut hiking. We spent about two weeks traveling around western and central Slovenia and loved every minute!
From there we headed down to the Dalmatian coast, took the ferry to Dubrovnik, and worked our way back up from island to island, Split and finally to Zagreb where we dropped off the car.
Finally, we took a bus (and then a train) from Zagreb to Prague for a week.
    It was a fantastic trip!
