The good folks over at Epicurious’s Epi-log blog have cobbled together a list of winter food festivals happening throughout the month, and there are some appetizing selections, from the Texas Hill Country Holiday Wine Tour to the Indio International Tamale Festival in California.

But we were taken by the name of one event that kicks off today: The Pig’s Ear Beer and Cider Festival in Hackney, London, which seems to have little to do with pork (its name comes from the Cockney rhyming slang for beer) but is all about great brews. It’s hosted by the Campaign for Real Ale, a beer-drinker’s collective that keeps tabs on the ale-inspired happenings throughout the UK. Check out their list of beer festivals through the year, or pick up a copy of the newest edition of their annual Good Beer Guide, which lists over 4,500 local pubs, “from country inns to urban style bars and backstreet boozers” that they claim is the “definitive guide to finding the perfect pint.” And check out the mobile version, which helps you navigate the country’s pubs on the go. You can download it free for three days, making it a useful tool for a short visit.
