We’ve never hidden our affection for the National Geographic MapMachine, the digital version of our best-selling Atlas. But after acknowleding its coolness in a past blog post, one commenter, Clint, noted that it would be an incredible tool to have on the iPhone. Well someone was listening to you Clint, as we’re proud to announce that the NG World Atlas is available on the iPhone and iPod Touch as of today.

The Atlas enables you to search the globe three ways: using the “antique” view, the classic ocean or political view, and the Satellite view which, working with Microsoft Bing mapping, enables you to zoom to street or backyard levels. The GPS functionality allows you to find your place with the map, and you can also use the built-in searchable index of over 6 million places to build customized maps with pins and photos.

The National Geographic World Atlas app can be purchased for $1.99, and right now is only available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. A more detailed list of features can be found here, and is available through the iTunes store here: http://tinyurl.com/worldatlas.

And you can still buy the big, glorious hardcover Atlas here.
