Have you ever gone sailing in a pool? It’s possible in Chile, according to our friends at National Geographic‘s Blog Central:

Covering 20 acres and stretching half a mile, the swimming hole at Chile’s San Alfonso del Mar resort is a 115-foot-deep, 66-milliongallon monster. (An Olympic-size pool is “only” 164 feet long, 6 feet 7 inches deep, 660,000 gallons.) Built for $3.5 million by the Chilean firm Crystal Lagoons, which aims to open an even vaster version in the Egyptian desert, the pool has delighted resort guests and curiosity seekers since 2007.

Pumped in from the Pacific, the water in this Chilean pool is 16°F warmer than the ocean. Photo: Eliseo Fernandez, Reuters.

This pool is ridiculously huge. As a rule maintaining the water in big swimming pools on the proper level of cleanness is quite a challenge. I cannot image the quality of water in this pool giant – don’t forget it’s a public pool and anyone can swim in it.

Great post. Great pool. This pool is equivalent in size to about 6000 regular domestic pools. I would love to swim there one day.

    Laura,
Its not a public pool, I used to live next to there for years. You have to own a timeshare to use it (or pretend to buy one)

When I first looked at this picture I thought that the swimming pool was a natural cove that had been used for a pool, but a closer look actually shows it is a real swimming pool!
I would love to swim in that.

This pool is ridiculously large. As a general rule keep the water in large pools at the appropriate level of cleanliness is a challenge. I can not imagine the quality of water in this big pool – do not forget it’s a public pool and anyone can swim in it. I agree with you 90%… It is all true
