On Board Mission Blue

When the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference offered it’s annual prize to National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Sylvia Earle, it also came with a wish. TED said Earle could ask for anything and they’d help to make it happen. Earle, a renown oceanographer, wished for global network of protected marine areas.
“I wish you would use all means at your disposal — films!
expeditions! the web! more! — to ignite public support for a global network of marine protected areas, hope spots large enough to save and restore the ocean, the blue heart of the planet,” is what she said.
This week, she got her wish. Earle is joined by leading scientists, innovators, conservationists, and artists on board the National Geographic Endeavor for Mission Blue, a conference that seeks to generate ideas to help save our oceans. National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Enric Sala will be blogging for NatGeo News from the boat, which is currently sailing through the Galapagos.
