Photo: Coopers Beach, Long IslandMemorial Day weekend is the official start of summer, and with its arrival comes the annual announcement enumerating the best beaches in the United States from Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka “Dr. Beach,” who runs the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University. This year’s winner is close to my heart (and home): Coopers Beach in Southampton, New York, on the east end of Long Island.

Say what you will about how the Island stacks up against the Jersey Shore, the Outer Banks, or Hawaii’s hideaways (don’t worry, they all appear on the list as well), Coopers is one of my all-time favorites (you can see a live webcam of the beach here). Idyllic, without the bravado of a boardwalk, and with a single quaint concession stand, I tend to visit at the beginning or end of the season, and that might have to be my plan this year as well. Dr. Leatherman says that with its #1 designation, the beach can expect a 20 percent spike in tourism.

How does your favorite beach rate? Check out the complete list after the jump.

It’s good to see a range of geography in the list. I’m a big fan of east coast beaches over west coast, but it still would have been good to see something from the northwest.
But my personal vote is for Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys.

No Michigan beaches? Dr. Leatherman needs to visit the midwest!

Although I’ve only been to two of the beaches listed (Oahu & Coronado) I definitely have another I think should be added to the list – Grace Bay Beach on Turks and Caicos is insanely gorgeous. It’s probably the best beach I’ve ever seen, and relatively untouched. So many of the beaches listed are close to totally industrialized areas and that, to me, ruins the atmosphere. Anyone who wants some tranquility and to NOT feel like a tourist should check out Le Vele: http://www.globalbasecamps.com/turks-and-caicos-islands/grace-bay-eco-hotel/le-vele

I’m sure the one from Hawaii is just amazing and breathtaking! I like that place too because it has a tropical climate. I prefer to go to beaches in a tropical climate.

Hey one of my favorites is in the top 10! I love Coronado Beach. Between the sheer beauty of the spot and the fact that it was made famous by “some like it hot,” its a great beach to go to!
