    Cuenca, Ecuador
Low cost of living, small country with lots to see and easy living. Great place to start your ‘seaschange’ expat way of life. The modern Vagabond will find this a very affordable city to live in. It is like Europe on a budget! Great old city with cobblestoned streets.

I recommend the incomparable Rock Carvings in Tanum which I have – speculatively – identified as an ancient hermetic map of the stars stretching over several miles, with the Milky Way represented in the form of a boat. See The Tanum Petroglyphs as an Ancient Cartographical and Archaeoastronomical System for Mapping the Heavens by Astronomy into Sky Maps and The Tanum System (in German). As written in those documents, my alleged discovery was made using materials found at the World Heritage website. At Tanum, local place names, in my opinion, still preserve the names of the ancient star groups or asterisms or even constellations that were used for this mapping – though these need not be exactly identical to those we use today. The site is currently located in Sweden, but was formerly in Norway. I think it possible that Tanum might be the location at which our modern stellar constellations were initially “grouped” by European man – for purposes of navigation in seafaring travel, long ago, and it is speculatively conceivable that the ancient seafarers used the stars for orientation to make a basic map of the Earth known to them.

I’m voting for the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. At age 13 I climbed the 500+ stairs to the top for the first time. The view from the top inspired my continued exploration of Germany throughout my life. At age 18 I climbed the 500+ stairs EVERY SINGLE DAY during my lunch break while on an internship there just off the town square.
At age 19 I studied in Trier for the first time and took in the view from the top of the Porta Nigra. I would also nominate the “Roman Monuments” in Trier for consideration by the World Heritage Committee. They were impressive enough to aid in my decision to return two years later for a second stint in Trier.

Of that lengthy list, I’ve only seen a ridiculously tiny number of World Heritage Sites, but it’s overwhelming to acknowledge how powerful Nature and the human genius are.
I’ve recently been to the Great Wall of China and it’s impressive, to put it mildly, and the number of Chinese people visiting it made me realise how much they love their own culture!
It’s very difficult to pick only one, as I love the vibe the Middle East and South America give, but I admit I’m flattered to see that among all those wonders there is one from my little hometown, the Italian island of Sardinia, unfairly underrated and widely unknown, so my pick goes to “Su Nuraxi di Barumini”, one of the thousands Bronze-Age stone towers (nuraghi) of which Sardinia has plenty scattered all throughout its territory. Barumini’s nuraghe is one of the best preserved and a precious evidence of pre-historic times.

I would like to nominate The Alhambra, Generalife and Albayzín in Granada, Spain. I just returned from my trip there and it was a breathtaking site filled with amazing memories I will treasure for the rest of my life. This Moorish fortress-palace is the essence of Islamic culture, art and architecture in Spain, bringing history and geography to life; fromlearning about the Moors and Al-Andalus, to the Christian Reconquista and finally the forced expulsion of all Moors and Jews under Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand when they conquered the city of Granada in 1492, uniting the peninsula for the first time, beginning the Golden Age of Spain. I would love for other NatGeo readers to learn more about The Alhambra, as well as other Moorish WH Sites in Spain, such as the Cathedral of Seville (w/ Giralda) and Real Alcazar in Seville, the Historic City of Toledo, and the Great Mosque (Mezquita) and Barrio de Juderia in Cordoba. Thanks.

    Komodo National Park, Indonesia
The only place in the world where komodo dragons exist. They still live in natural habitat. I was lucky enough to visit last May and encountered several of them basking, whereas not all visitors can see them in the wild while trekking. It’s kind of an adventure because they can be very still, look like a dead log, run fast all of a sudden, and bite. But no worries, that’s what guides are for!

I VOTE FOR LEPENSKI VIR IN SERBIA
One of the Europe’s most significant prehistoric archaeological sites, whose oldest layers are dated into the 7th millennium B.C.E. The Culture of Lepenski Vir had developed on the locality after which it was named. This useful publication informs potential visitor(s) about the basic lifestyle characteristics of peoples who inhabited the area of the Iron Gate gorge somewhere between the 7,000 and 4,800 B.C.E. The architecture, burial traditions, astonishing sculptural achievements, as well as the objects for quotidian usage, testify of a skillfully organized community with elaborate religious and social system.

I vote for Persepollis. Built by the Achmenid dynasty who had rulers like Cyrus the great( Kurush is original Persian/Zoroastrian name)who gave the world the first Human Charter.
Also the faith of this dynasty like all other ancient or original Persian dynasties i.e Zoroastrianism gave freedom to others to practise their own faith. The Builders of Persopollis also gave the Jews respite from their captivity
Ironically Persopollis was destroyed by Alexander ironically called Great( for his destructions) and later by the Byzantine wars with Persia and later the Islamic take over of Persia since both the Byzantine-christo and the Islamic empire thirsted to throw out Zoroastrianism and convert everyone to their faith…
Persepollis is a showcase of true secularim, democracy and royalty..

Strasbourg – Grande île is my favorite. I am French so I am going to write in French and then I’ll try to translate in english.
This district is the historic center of Strasbourg. The water, the locks, the reflections maintain the mystery which glides in alleys and bounces on the half-timbered facades, The majestic cathedral draws up itself, as a protector. In summer, the flowers grow everywhere, from bridges to balconies.

Mompox is one of the most beautiful cities in Colombia. Is preserved especially its architecture, dating from the eighteenth century. The city played a key role in trade and the articulation of a nation. Although it is not easy to reach, the effort is worthwhile. Whenever you visit this place, it is special – in winter, spring, summer or in autumn at its best. Just a very special AND very QUIET place in a typical tourist country. Marvellous!

The village of Hollóko (meaning raven stone) is one of the most charming spots in Hungary. This isolated little village hidden in the Cserhat mountains is a Unesco Heritage Site. With its prime location and rich history this lovely village is loved by tourists. It is a perfectly preserved little place that surprises every visitor in a way. Locals are justifiably proud of their distinct traditions, centuries-old culture and the cultural wealth of their village. They are committed to preserve the village’s white houses forever. They know something well. This isolated little place, rich in traditions is nothing else but a world of wonders. The people living there are gifted in many ways. They know how to honor and cherish their past and costumes and how to keep their simple life of joy alive.

Cocos Island National Park, named by Jacques Yves Cousteau The Most Beautiful Island in the World deserves the title of MY most favorite Heritage Site in the World. It is historically one of the most interesting places in the planet, all sorts of history is involved in it. Pirate stories, Panama Canal conspirations, Treasure Hunts, incredible biodiversity and the only Island of the Galapagos complex with a Tropical Rainforest in it, with a great many endemic species in both land and sea. I’ve been there so I know what I’m talking about,

It is not only beautiful, it is the 2nd longest barrier reef in the world adn therefore ecologically essential; however, it is ecologically threatened by development in the region. Hope is that National Geographic publicity will help to bring effective protective measures to the reef.

Istanbul/Turkiye: it’s a mixture of rich and poor, modern and history, clean and dirty, and so many different cultures and relegions all together!!
Cappadocia/Turkiye: is not only an important spot for Christian history but also AWESOME spot for hikers and photographers
Pamukkale/Denizli/Turkiye: is one of the wonderful places I’ve ever seen. visited 5 times and going again in a few weeks. wonderful for photography, hiking and history.
I’d also suggest Ephesus/Turkiye: its a huge open area of an ancient city, you basicly walk around with your eyes wide open, go in and around the city ruins and just try to imagine how it was when it was alive.

My vote is for Mompos’s beautiful village, why?
Because when you visit it you remain without words and you want to do something for it. Then do it already and vote you also for Mompos.
