Tomorrow is not Tuesday in New Orleans. It’s Mardi Gras.
Although Fat Tuesday may be the climax of Carnival season, that doesn’t mean the city has been idling by on the days leading up to the big event. In fact, parades have been rolling down the streets of the Big Easy since January! Here is a taste of New Orleans’ pre-Mardi Gras celebrations.
High school marching bands are a huge part of the parades for Mardi Gras. The St. Augustine Marching 100 is one of the best bands that steps out for the parades, including the Krewe of Muses parade, which rolls the Thursday before Fat Tuesday in Uptown.
The Krewe of Muses is the only all-female krewe that parades at night. They are known for their satirical floats and their excellent throws. If you’re lucky, you’ll not only catch beads but bracelets, notepads, and the famous glitter shoes. I scored my first glitter shoe this year!
And among the floats and bands you’ll find many marching clubs like the Pussyfooters who were dancing along the streets in the Krewe of Thoth parade on Sunday.
