Not just the province of the dead and those who mourn them, cemeteries can be celebrated for all they offer the living. Europe boasts some of the most interesting and elaborate cemeteries in the world. Here are five of the most striking, all of which happen to be located in capital cities.

Portugal is made for wanderers. From the top of the Moorish remnants of Castelo de São Jorge, Lisbon cascades downhill in all directions, new paths beckoning at every turn. Surf camps dot the 215-mile stretch south of the storied capital city. Part of the region known as the Alentejo, this shore is far quieter than the Algarve beaches at the country’s southern edge.

Autumn is kicking into full swing (for the northern half of the world, at least), so we thought we’d celebrate the season with a special edition of I Heart My City. Here are 20 fall must-dos from I Heart contributors in 20 cities around the world.

Anyone who’s visited Lisbon can easily reel off the prerequisite activities: listening to melancholic Fado music, hopping aboard an old tram straining up a steep incline, climbing the ramparts of the old Moorish Castelo de São Jorge, visiting the Belem district with its monuments to the great explorers, strolling along a woodland trail.

Nuno Lopes de Paula was born and raised in Lisbon. After studying tourism and working in the local tourism office, he went off to see the world, but his heart belongs to Portugal. Here are a few of his favorite things about his hometown.
