Adorable Animals From Around the World

Back in 2009, Melissa Brandts was hiking with her husband in Canada’s Banff National Park when she stopped to take a self-portrait alongside the sparkling Lake Minnewanka. Just as the shutter went off, this curious squirrel (right) popped into the frame. The Brandts sent the photo to National Geographic magazine’s Your Shot, and photo editor Susan Welchman chose it for her Daily Dozen gallery. Thus, the Banff Crasher Squirrel was born!

The furry little guy made his way back into the headlines last week after a similar photo (top) submitted to the 2011 Traveler Photo Contest was spotted by our photo editors. The Bing Cherry Squirrel soon made her own waves across the web, and the website (and bastion of adorableness,) Cute Overload dubbed her Banff Squirrel’s new girlfriend.

Bing Cherry Squirrel isn’t the only adorable animal photo to be submitted to this year’s contest. Browse the gallery above to see a few of our favorites and then enter your own.
