National Geographic Society photographer Bob Krist first visited Iceland in 1986, when he and his young family spent over three months on the island, shooting a cover story for the magazine.

It was a life-changing experience for Krist and though he’s traveled to scores of countries in the ensuing 27 years, Iceland and her people continue to hold a special place in his heart. Krist has been back to the island many times during those years, on assignment for Traveler and other magazines, as well as for pleasure traveling with his wife, Peggy.

But it was always his wish that his two older sons, who were just toddlers when they were last there, could see the place as adults. Last summer, the stars aligned, and Bob, his brother, author Gary Krist (who has written extensively for Traveler over the years), and his sons Matthew and Brian took a road trip around the island.

Here’s a short video diary of that epic two-week jaunt on Iceland’s Ring Road:

We were in Iceland early in summer but on a cruise. Good photography is hit & miss as we are constantly in a rush. however I did mange to get some good shots of this beautiful country which you so vividly show in your video. I am 85 now. Did film photography from 1943 to 1983, video to 2006 and now it is digital with photoshop instead of a smelly darkroom, which was also great fun.
